On August 8, news surfaced that Court No. 2 in the city of Atyrau has sentenced a local man to five years in prison under Article 172 of Kazakhstan’s Criminal Code — “Participation in Armed Conflicts on the Territory of a Foreign State,” Orda.kz reports.
Investigators found that while working in the Russian Federation, the man signed a contract with the armed forces and took part in combat operations in Ukraine. He sustained shrapnel injuries during one of the shelling incidents.
Law enforcement reminded that under Article 170 of the Criminal Code (“Mercenarism”), Kazakhstanis face up to 12 years in prison for such actions.
The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
