Twenty FAW trucks from China were illegally imported into Kazakhstan. According to the Financial Monitoring Agency, the vehicles belonged to the Euro-2 environmental class, although Kazakhstan bans the import of equipment below the Euro-4 standard, Orda.kz reports.
The customs value of the trucks exceeded 284 million tenge. They were later supplied through affiliated companies under public procurement contracts worth more than 600 million tenge.
According to investigators, a group of people acted through controlled LLPs. To clear the vehicles through customs, they allegedly issued fake vehicle design safety certificates. The documents claimed the trucks met the Euro-5 standard.
With court approval, the suspects’ property was seized, including nine cars and an apartment. One suspect was taken into custody, while two accomplices were placed under travel restrictions. Other information is not subject to disclosure under Article 201 of Kazakhstan’s Criminal Procedure Code, the agency said.
The AFM noted that Euro-2 vehicles pollute the air more than vehicles meeting Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards. Such trucks emit more harmful substances and pose health risks.
