Sinopec has begun drilling operations in the Mangystau region, Orda.kz reports, citing the Ministry of Energy.
A 5.5-kilometer-deep exploratory well will be drilled at the Sai-Utes site by Sinopec International Energy Investment Holdings Netherlands B.V., a subsidiary of Sinopec. According to the Ministry, the company spent two years conducting geological surveys before identifying two promising locations for oil wells.
The planned cost of drilling the well is 4.7 billion tenge, the Ministry of Energy confirmed.
Sinopec already has a presence in Mangystau. Alongside fellow Chinese state-owned company CNPC, it co-owns Buzachi Operating Ltd, which extracts oil from the North Buzachi field. In 2023 and 2024, workers at the company raised concerns over labor conditions and reported pressure from management.
In March 2025, reports indicated that KazMunayGas was considering Sinopec as a potential partner for the exploration and development of the Berezovskoye field in the West Kazakhstan region.
