Almaty’s Sergek traffic cameras will automatically detect violations committed by electric scooter riders, Orda.kz reports.

Police spokesperson Saltanat Azirbek announced the measure at a Regional Communications Service briefing. The system will begin operating once the databases of scooter-sharing companies have been integrated with police information systems.

The cameras will detect riders entering the road without a valid driver’s license, speeding, violating intersection rules and carrying passengers.

It remains unclear whether riders will be fined for using roads when sidewalks are inaccessible because of extensive repair work across the city.

Until the integration is completed, the rules will be enforced by patrol officers, district inspectors and mobile scooter patrols.
