Bolashak Scholarships Went to Students Who Did Not Meet the Criteria, Audit Says

Kazakhstan’s Supreme Audit Chamber has found violations in the administration of the Bolashak program, Orda.kz reports.
According to Audit Chamber member Kaskin, 40 scholarships were awarded on an individual basis by decision of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education to students who did not meet the general selection criteria. This cost 7.7 billion tenge. Another 151 scholarships were awarded beyond the approved limit.
The artificial intelligence track is especially telling: of the 54 scholarships planned, only five were actually awarded, while the remaining 49 were redistributed to other areas.he said.
A survey of teachers, students and graduates supports these findings. Some 46% of teachers consider wages uncompetitive. Another 41% of students say academic programs are outdated and impractical, while 45% believe university infrastructure does not meet modern standards.
