After residents of the Peretaska microdistrict raised concerns about persistent noise and an unpleasant smell — allegedly coming from the Atyrau Oil Refinery — the company has issued an official response, Orda.kz reports.
In a statement to an Orda.kz correspondent, representatives of the Atyrau Refinery (ANPZ) emphasized that the facility operates strictly within Kazakhstan’s legal and sanitary-environmental regulations. They noted that all production processes are under constant observation — both internally and by authorized state bodies.
The company added that since April 2025, an independent environmental assessment has been underway in the refinery’s sanitary protection zone. The goal of the study is to evaluate the environmental impact of the plant and to potentially revise the boundaries of the sanitary zone.
Environmental monitoring at the refinery is not new. Since 2010, ANPZ has operated an environmental control system with four automatic air monitoring stations. Three of these are positioned at the edge of residential zones, including Peretaska, Mirny, and Khimposelok.
According to the data from automatic posts and internal control, no exceedances of maximum permissible concentrations of hydrogen sulfide were recorded in June–July. The plant operated as per usual,
the company said in its statement.
ANPZ also pointed to its automated emission monitoring system installed at major production units. These devices measure emissions in real time and send updates to the state environmental database every 20 minutes.
