Residents of the left bank of the Peretaska River in Atyrau say living near the Atyrau Oil Refinery (ANPZ) is increasingly affecting their health and quality of life, Orda.kz reports.
According to locals, the situation with emissions and noise from the refinery continues to deteriorate, with no meaningful response from authorities.
When the plant starts the flares, especially when the wind is blowing in our direction, it is impossible to breathe, and the walls of the houses literally vibrate from the noise. This has been happening for several years, and each time our complaints remain unanswered,
say residents of Atyrau.
People living nearby are especially concerned about health impacts.
They say children and elderly residents are regularly reporting headaches, fatigue, and weakness. Despite this, they claim no medical screenings or public air quality testing have been carried out by authorities.
In early July that environmental agencies began long-term monitoring around the refinery site. The results of a study, expected by spring 2026, will be used to reassess the refinery’s sanitary protection zone and its potential health and environmental impact.
