A female Amur tiger named Umit was released into the wild in the Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve in early August. The Forestry and Wildlife Committee has provided an update on her adaptation, Orda.kz reports.

Umit is exploring riverside tugai forests, areas near water and other wildlife habitats as she gradually adjusts to her new surroundings.

Specialists are assessing her adaptation using data on her movements, activity and behavior. A GPS collar allows them to track the tiger remotely, while field teams examine her tracks and other signs of activity. Camera traps provide additional information about her behavior in the wild.

Four Amur tigers — two adults and two cubs — were brought to Kazakhstan from Russia in May 2026. The male remains under observation, while the two cubs will stay in enclosures for at least another year and a half.

The program ultimately aims to establish a stable tiger population in the Ili River delta and the southern Balkhash area.
