After Public Outcry, Case of Aizat Dzhumanova Reclassified as Homicide

The investigation into the death of 32-year-old Aizat Dzhumanova from the Jetisu region has taken a new turn. What was first classified as “negligent manslaughter” is now officially being investigated as homicide, following pressure from the victim’s family and widespread public outrage, Orda.kz reports.
Background
In June, Aizat Dzhumanova was brought to a hospital in critical condition — investigators believe by her husband. Doctors fought for her life, but she died within thirty minutes.
Initially, police opened a case under Article 106, Part 3 of Kazakhstan’s Criminal Code — “Causing grievous bodily harm resulting in death through negligence.”
“There was no intent to kill. After all, her husband brought her to the hospital himself,” police said at the time.
That explanation sparked anger among relatives and the wider community. Photographs of Dzhumanova’s body and witness statements made clear her injuries could not have been accidental.
She had been assaulted — systematically and brutally.
Parents Demand Justice
Unconvinced by the findings of Taldykorgan forensic experts, Aizat’s parents demanded an exhumation and a second independent examination in Almaty. The new report changed the case.
Experts found that:
The injuries were presumably inflicted by a blunt object. The nature of the blows indicated a systematic beating, not a 'one-off conflict.' Multiple bruises, fractures, and lacerations were found on the body. Traces of being dragged along the ground were not confirmed.
The report concluded that even with immediate medical help, Dzhumanova’s chances of survival would have been minimal — contradicting the police theory of “negligence.”
The case has since been reclassified under Article 99 of the Criminal Code — “Homicide.”
If they had brought my daughter right away, she might have lived. But she was already unconscious when they did — and even then they called it an accident, her mother told Orda.kz.
Suspect in Custody
Police have detained Aibar Kairatuly, Dzhumanova’s husband, who is now the main suspect. Orda.kz had learned that he recently ran for akim of Kapal village.
Aizat’s family says they will continue to seek accountability for everyone who remained silent during her prolonged abuse.
