An investigation into the alleged illegal extraction of sand from the Tobol riverbed in the Kostanay Region has been completed. Investigators say the head of STS-Cement organized mining outside the area authorized by the state, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Financial Monitoring Agency, two dredgers extracted sand directly from the riverbed and shoreline.
Investigators say more than 113,000 cubic meters of sand worth a total of 719 million tenge was sold.
The operation allegedly changed the course of the Tobol River, damaged its banks, disrupted the natural flow of water and caused flooding in some areas. Satellite images showed that more than 28,000 square meters of protected river land had been damaged.
The agency said restoring the area would require strengthening the riverbanks, clearing the riverbed and restoring the surrounding land.
A court froze the suspect’s assets, including 12 vehicles, 10 plots of land and commercial property.
The criminal case has been sent to court.
