In the Qaraganda region, eight-year-old Nurasyl Tolegenov took part in a traffic safety raid alongside highway patrol officers on the Qaraganda–Almaty route, Orda.kz reports.
Dressed in a miniature police uniform, the young “lieutenant” helped stop vehicles and reminded drivers about key road safety rules — such as adhering to speed limits, avoiding dangerous overtaking, and taking regular breaks while driving.
The event was part of a broader road safety campaign aimed at reducing accidents on some of the region’s busiest highways.
With the start of the summer season, traffic along the Qaraganda–Balkhash route increases significantly. In response, we’ve ramped up patrols — from 17 vehicles previously to 30 now. Each patrol unit is spaced every 10 kilometers, said Medet Nurmukhan, commander of the patrol battalion.
So far this year, the region has recorded 34 traffic accidents, resulting in 16 deaths and 51 injuries. Authorities have also detained 25 drunk drivers on national highways since the start of the year.
