Woman Sentenced to Seven Years for Spreading Terrorist Ideology and Attempting to Join Group in Syria

A resident of Astana has been sentenced to seven years in prison for promoting terrorist ideology on Telegram and attempting to join a terrorist organization in Syria, Orda.kz reports.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the woman distributed content in a group chat justifying religious violence and discussed plans to travel to Syria, where she intended to marry off her two underage daughters to members of terrorist groups.
She was detained by police at Almaty airport while attempting to travel to Syria via Türkiye.
During the trial, the court reviewed evidence confirming her intent to promote terrorism and join a banned group. As a result, she received a seven-year prison sentence.
The prosecutor’s office noted that participation in terrorist organizations carries a penalty of up to 17 years in prison with property confiscation, while the promotion of terrorism or public incitement to violence can lead to up to 12 years of imprisonment.
