A Kazakh national detained in the United Arab Emirates is suspected of participating in the January 2022 unrest in Almaty, reports Orda.kz.
Investigators believe he was an associate of the notorious crime figure Arman Dzhumageldiyev, known as "Wild Arman."
He is suspected of actively participating in mass riots in Almaty between January 5 and 7, 2022, as part of Dzumageldiyev’s gang. After committing the crimes, the suspect fled and was on the international wanted list for nearly three years. He was later detained in the United Arab Emirates, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
Arman Dzhumageldiyev was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison for organizing the Qantar riots. More than 40 others were also convicted in the same case.
