Experts have calculated how much it costs Kazakhstanis in different regions to prepare pilaf, one of the most popular dishes of the main spring holiday, Orda.kz reports.
For the calculations, analysts at the First Credit Bureau used average prices for lamb, rice, onions, carrots, and sunflower oil in cities and regional centers, based on data from the Bureau of National Statistics.
The standard basket included one kilogram of rice and 1.3 kilograms of meat.
On average, cooking pilaf in Kazakhstan costs about 6,100 tenge, with meat accounting for the largest share of the total, around 5,100 tenge.
The most expensive city in which to cook pilaf is Almaty, where the set of ingredients costs about 6,700 tenge. Astana is slightly cheaper at 6,500 tenge. The most affordable option is in Uralsk, where the same set costs about 5,000 tenge.
If measured against income, the picture changes. On average in Kazakhstan, one monthly salary is enough to cook pilaf about 71 times. In Almaty, that figure reaches 82 cauldrons, and in Astana, 87.
The most advantageous city by this measure is Atyrau. Thanks to relatively high salaries there, residents can afford to cook pilaf up to 101 times, even though the average ingredient set costs about 5,900 tenge.
Alas, residents of Turkestan Region can afford much less: in the regional center, the ingredients cost 5,700 tenge, but the average salary in the region is enough to cook pilaf only 51 times. the experts noted.
