A rare specimen of the toothless katran, a relict plant listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book, was discovered during a recent scientific expedition, Orda.kz reports.
The plant was identified by a senior staff member from the reserve’s science department during a field survey conducted from April 18 to 21. Toothless katran, a type of wild kale, typically blooms in April and May and bears fruit between May and June.
Scientists highlight the significance of the find, describing it as a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Ustyurt ecosystem.
What a great stroke of luck to encounter an endemic species of the Turan province, they noted.
Reserve inspectors are continuing to study the plant’s habitat to gather more information on the distribution of this rare species.
