The United States has exempted Hungary from sanctions, allowing it to continue paying for Russian gas under contracts with Gazprom, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced, reports Orda.kz, citing The Insider.
Szijjártó said the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump made the decision. A similar waiver had previously been granted to Türkiye.
The Hungarian minister noted that earlier sanctions imposed by the Biden administration on Gazprom and Gazprombank had created serious challenges for Central European countries.
Yesterday, we received confirmation from Washington that our request for a sanctions exemption was approved,
Szijjártó stated.
