A court in the Ulytau region has sentenced a local resident for illegally extracting and selling manganese ore, causing over a billion tenge in damage to the state, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Financial Monitoring Agency (FMA), between 2020 and 2023, the individual illegally operated the Vostochny Karazhal quarry, a major iron and manganese deposit within the Atasu ore region. He had no license or contract but still managed to mine more than 16,000 tons of manganese, valued at 1.1 billion tenge.
To conceal the illegal activity, he arranged fictitious deals to export the ore. The manganese was sold both within Kazakhstan and to Russia, generating over 3.5 billion tenge in revenue.
The regional department of the FMA uncovered the scheme.
The individual was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison. His farm and five vehicles, valued at 97.8 million tenge, were also confiscated.
The sentence has not yet entered into legal force.
