A new competitor may soon enter Kazakhstan’s ride-hailing market as Ukrainian company Uklon considers expansion, Orda.kz reports, citing Bloomberg.
Kyivstar, a telecom provider under the international Veon group, announced plans to acquire 97% of Uklon’s shares for $155.2 million. The new ownership aims to introduce the service to additional markets, including Kazakhstan.
Veon will explore opportunities for Uklon to enter Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, said Kaan Terzioğlu, CEO of Veon.
If launched, Kazakhstan would be the second Central Asian country where Uklon operates. The company entered Uzbekistan in 2023 and now holds a leading position in Ukraine’s taxi and delivery sector, covering 27 cities.
Kazakhstan’s taxi market is currently dominated by Yandex GO, which controls around 90% of ride-hailing services. The Agency for Protection and Development of Competition (AZRK) is now reviewing ways to boost competition in the sector.
