The Verkhovna Rada has approved a presidential bill aimed at restoring the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP), Orda.kz reports citing RBK-Ukraine.
The bill received support from 331 lawmakers. Reportedly, the legislation effectively reinstates the status quo prior to the adoption of Law No. 12414, which had drawn sharp criticism from anti-corruption advocates and the European Union.
The new law also includes provisions requiring employees of anti-corruption agencies with access to state secrets to undergo polygraph testing.
The controversial Law No. 12414, previously passed by parliament, triggered widespread protests in several Ukrainian cities.
In response, on July 24, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted the new bill to strengthen NABU and SAP's powers to the Verkhovna Rada.
