Ukraine and Syria Restore Diplomatic Relations

Ukraine and Syria have formally restored diplomatic ties, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Sept. 25 following his meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Orda.kz reports, citing The Kyiv Independent.
Today Ukraine and Syria signed a Joint Communique on the restoration of diplomatic relations. We welcome this important step and are ready to support the Syrian people on the path to stability,Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.
He said the two leaders also discussed opportunities for cooperation and shared security concerns:
“We also agreed to build relations based on mutual respect and trust.”
Ukraine had cut ties with Damascus on June 30, 2022, after the then-Bashar al-Assad regime recognized the Russian-occupied regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as “independent.”
