The Majilis has approved a bill ratifying an agreement between Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates on the construction of wind power plants. Under the agreement, UAE investors will finance two major wind energy projects in the Jambyl region, with a total installed capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW), Orda.kz reports
The agreement focuses on developing renewable energy, promoting sustainable energy solutions, and supporting joint efforts to combat climate change. Both wind farms will include energy storage systems and supporting infrastructure.
The first project will feature a 500 MW wind farm, a 150 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) with 300 MWh capacity, and 125 km of 220 kV overhead transmission lines.
The second project, similar in scale, includes another 500 MW wind farm and a 150 MW storage system, also with 300 MWh capacity. The storage units will cover 30% of installed capacity and be capable of operating independently for up to two hours.
Both projects will operate under fixed tariffs for a 25-year period, creating stable conditions for long-term investment.
The investment agreement with UAE partners was signed last year. Once operational, the wind farms are expected to supply electricity to around 300,000 households in southern Kazakhstan.
