Two Officials Appointed to Oversee Construction of Kazakhstan’s First Nuclear Power Plant

Timur Zhantikin and Asset Makhambetov have been appointed to oversee the construction of Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant, Orda.kz reports.
According to a presidential decree, both will serve as deputy heads of the newly established Atomic Energy Agency. Aqorda officially announced their appointments.
The agency, created in March 2025 and led by former Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev, is tasked with developing the country’s nuclear industry. Its responsibilities include overseeing uranium mining, ensuring radiation safety, and managing the nuclear power plant project.
Construction is expected to begin within the next two years in the village of Ulken, located in the Almaty region.
Among the potential technology providers are CNNC (China), Rosatom (Russia), KHNP (South Korea), and EDF (France).
