Two employees of the Ministry of Justice of Kazakhstan will testify as witnesses in the court case of Marat Beketayev, Orda.kz reports.
Minister of Justice Yerlan Sarsembayev announced this on the sidelines of the Majilis:
As far as I know, the case is in court. Two employees of the ministry have been invited as witnesses.
The Ministry's employees are not facing accusations in Beketayev's case, the minister clarified.
Former Justice Minister Marat Beketayev was detained in October 2023 while attempting to leave the country — he was en route to London via Istanbul.
According to investigators, Beketayev allegedly lobbied for the interests of Bolashak Consulting Group, which represented Kazakhstan in the protracted Stati case.
The firm, linked to former Almaty Akim Bauyrzhan Baibek and Beketayev himself, received annual contracts for unnecessary services, which investigators say caused the state particularly large financial losses.
Additionally, the former minister is suspected of illegally transferring assets abroad with the support of former security chief Karim Massimov.
