The head of the White House has reversed his earlier position on taking part in preparations for a meeting between the Ukrainian president and the Russian leader, Orda.kz reports.
According to The Guardian, citing sources in the U.S. administration, Trump now believes that Kyiv and Moscow should prepare for direct negotiations on their own. In his view, such talks would be the next step toward ending the war.
The American president still plans to hold a trilateral summit with his participation, but only after Zelenskyy and Putin meet face to face.
Whether that meeting will take place remains uncertain.
Earlier, during a meeting with Zelensky and EU leaders at the White House on August 18, Trump spoke about “starting preparations” for a meeting between the two presidents. Reportedly, during a phone call with Putin, the Russian leader suggested holding joint talks in Moscow.
Zelenskyy rejected that option but reaffirmed his readiness to meet:
“We are ready for any format at the level of leaders. Therefore, I confirmed, and all European leaders supported me, that we are ready for a bilateral meeting.”
