The U.S. President may take part in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine scheduled for Thursday in Türkiye, Orda.kz reports. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced strong support for the potential visit, calling it “the right idea.”
According to Reuters, the U.S. President told reporters at the White House on Monday that his attendance was under consideration.
I was thinking about flying in. I don't know where I'll be on Thursday. I have so many meetings, but I was thinking about actually flying in. There's a possibility, I think, Trump told reporters.
On his Telegram channel, Zelenskyy noted that Trump had said “very important words,” and confirmed he would personally attend the talks in Istanbul.
I supported President Trump with the idea of direct talks with Putin. I said openly that I am ready for the meeting. I will be in Türkiye . I hope that the Russians will not avoid this meeting. And, of course, all of us in Ukraine would like President Trump to be there with us — at this meeting in Türkiye . This is the right idea. We can change a lot, Zelenskyy wrote.
He also added, “I will be waiting for Putin” in Istanbul, emphasizing his readiness for direct negotiations. Zelenskyy previously said he would be in Istanbul.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had proposed direct talks with Kyiv on May 15 in Istanbul. As of now, the Kremlin has not confirmed whether Putin will attend.
Separately, Zelenskyy signed into law the ratification of a U.S.-Ukraine agreement on mineral resources and the creation of an investment recovery fund, according to the Verkhovna Rada. The agreement was signed on April 30 and ratified by Ukraine’s parliament on May 8. The move enables the fund to begin full operations.
