A truck carrying Ukrainian-made chocolate caused a stir at the Kazakhstan–Russia border after customs officers in Russia’s Altai region refused to allow the sweets to enter the country, Orda.kz reports.
The shipment — 714 kilograms of chocolate packed in 372 boxes — was stopped at the checkpoint and ordered to return to Kazakhstan. Russian authorities said an administrative case will be opened against the transporter for violating import restrictions.
Ukrainian goods have been banned in Russia since 2018, with sanctions covering a wide range of products — from electronics to confectionery. According to Russia’s Federal Customs Service, the seized chocolate bars were manufactured at a Ukrainian factory, making the shipment illegal under current trade rules.
Meanwhile, chocolate prices in both Russia and Kazakhstan have been rising at record rates, while production and sales have continued to decline for the second consecutive year.
