Travel blogger Nurken Tazhibay has shared footage highlighting the alarming decline in the Caspian Sea's water levels over the past decade. The video, titled "Save Caspian Sea," showcases the significant reduction in water levels, Orda reports.
As noted by Abay Turikpenbayev, president of the seaport in Aqtau, the Caspian shrank by 15 cm last year alone, following three consecutive years of decreases between 20 and 25 cm. Such a consistent trend is unprecedented, he said.
The drop in the Caspian Sea's water level has accelerated in recent years. According to environmental experts, the primary causes are climate change and human environmental impact. They warn that over the next decade, the sea will continue shrinking even faster, potentially leading to an ecological disaster in the region.
A study by German and Dutch scientists, published in Nature Communications Earth & Environment, predicts the Caspian will recede by another 9 to 18 meters by 2100, triggering major environmental problems.
Experts remain divided on whether this process can be stopped. Some believe that with proper attention and more careful use of water resources, the situation could be reversed. Others are convinced the process is irreversible.
