Archaeologists have uncovered about 150 unusually shaped mounds, one of them 140 meters wide, Orda.kz reports citing Moi Gorod.
A burial site has been found in the West Kazakhstan region that may belong to a previously unknown civilization of the early Iron Age. According to the Inspectorate for the Protection of Monuments, the discovery consists of about 150 burial mounds (kurgans) concentrated in one area.
One of the mounds, with a ditch 140 meters wide, drew particular attention from scientists. It is believed that a person of high social status may have been buried there. Burials of unusual shape were found around it — not only rectangular, but also ring-shaped, and even consisting of two rings, the report stated.
Archaeologists suggest that the Sarmatians may have lived nearby, but conclusions can only be drawn after a full study. Specialists are now preparing documentation to launch an excavation competition. If the site is confirmed to be of archaeological value, the territory will be granted protected status.
Local residents call the area mystical and link it to many legends.
