Toqayev Reviews Almaty Region’s Progress
President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev met with Marat Sultangaziyev, Akim of the Almaty region, to review the area's development results for the first quarter of 2025, Orda.kz reports, citing Aqorda.
During the meeting, the Akim reported the launch of 12 new industrial projects, including the expansion of GALANZ bottlers and the construction of the Bartogay HPP-28 hydroelectric power plant. Sultangaziyev noted that 122 projects worth a total of 2.4 trillion tenge are currently being implemented across the region.
Sultangaziyev also provided updates on the development of the cities of Qonayev and Alatau. In Qonayev, the "Smart Qonaev" system — a smart city initiative — is being introduced alongside major upgrades to roads and utility networks. Meanwhile, in Alatau, adjustments to the city's master plan are underway, along with the design of new infrastructure projects.
President Toqayev instructed that particular attention be given to the development of these two cities, the broader Almaty agglomeration, and the construction of modern utility and road networks.
A little over a year ago, the Ministry of National Economy outlined plans to create the city of Alatau as part of a broader strategy to develop the Almaty agglomeration and expand the Alatau Free Economic Zone (FEZ).
The project aims to ease commuter migration to Almaty, which currently sees up to 400,000 people traveling to the city each day.
