President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev has instructed the government to speed up construction of the Torgay–Irgiz highway, presidential press secretary Ruslan Zheldibay announced, reports Orda.kz.
The highway is a key section of the Center–West transport corridor, designed to link central Kazakhstan with the Trans-Caspian route and open access to Europe, Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the Persian Gulf states.
Work on the project began in the mid-2010s but remains unfinished.
The road will stretch nearly 2,000 kilometers and is expected to shorten travel time between central and western regions by 560 kilometers.
Toqayev previously addressed the project at the Qurultay in the spring, when he also ordered the restoration of Arqalyq airport and the construction of a new terminal.
Authorities expect the Center–West corridor to drive regional development, create jobs, and improve access to employment opportunities for low-income families.
For 2025, 605 billion tenge has been allocated to road construction and repairs nationwide. The Ministry of Transport reports that 93% of national roads and 89% of local roads are currently in good condition.
