President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev received Haitham al-Ghais, Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), at Aqorda to discuss the state of the global oil market, Orda.kz reports.
According to the presidential press service, Toqayev “highly praised OPEC’s efforts” to stabilize global oil markets and described al-Ghais’s visit as “an important step in developing constructive dialogue.”
Meanwhile, OPEC has been placing a burden of responsibility for production quota violations on Kazakhstan.
Against this backdrop, Toqayev stressed that Kazakhstan’s national interests would benefit from producing more oil, not less.
The President emphasized that Kazakhstan supports the OPEC+ decision to gradually increase oil production volumes, taking into account the priority of protecting national interests,
Aqorda reports.
Toqayev also underlined the importance of maintaining a balance between the interests of oil-producing nations and importing countries.
Aqorda did not clarify whether Toqayev and al-Ghais discussed Kazakhstan’s compensation plan.
Under the updated schedule, Astana is obliged to cut its production by an extraordinary 2.9 million barrels per day between September 2025 and June 2026, which could deal a blow to the Kazakh economy, according to experts.
