Orda.kz summarizes President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev’s remarks at the international conference “Central Asia in the Face of Global Climate Threats.”
Speaking at the event, Toqayev emphasized that Central Asia is one of the regions most affected by climate change.
This situation confirms the need for coordinated actions by all states in the region. The climate decisions we make must clearly correlate with national strategies and ensure high-quality synergy for the full development of the region. We must find the right balance between the growth of our economies and the climate agenda,Toqayev said.
He highlighted joint efforts with Uzbekistan to green the dried bottom of the Aral Sea, nationwide tree-planting campaigns, and the “Taza Kazakhstan” initiative, which aims to foster environmental awareness among citizens.
The President also reiterated Kazakhstan’s push for “green energy” development, including renewables and plans to produce “green hydrogen.”
Kazakhstan produces about 40% of the world's uranium. This is an important contribution, given that almost 10% of the world's electricity is generated at nuclear power plants. Kazakhstan is now planning to build its first nuclear power plant to reduce emissions and improve its energy security, the President noted.
Toqayev addressed regional water issues and promoted the idea of a Central Asian water and energy partnership.
Over the past twenty years, per capita water availability has decreased by 30%. At the same time, 70% of regional water resources are transboundary. That is why we need the support of the international community in developing water-saving technologies, smart irrigation and hydrological monitoring, said Qasym-Jomart Toqayev.
He concluded by announcing the creation of an International Biodiversity Fund under the President of Kazakhstan.
Toqayev also spoke at the Central Asia-European Union summit.
