In a January 3rd interview with Ana Tili, President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev discussed Kazakhstan's foreign policy and responded to speculation about his diplomatic priorities.
When asked about perceptions that his diplomatic background influences his leadership focus, Toqayev emphasized Kazakhstan's strategic importance on the global stage.
He noted that Kazakhstan's status as a "middle power" demands responsible international conduct.
At the same time, as the Head of State, I deal with domestic policy issues on a daily basis and consider this work absolutely necessary. Therefore, the assertion that my activities are biased towards foreign policy is incorrect, Toqayev noted.
Discussing foreign relations, he reaffirmed Kazakhstan's support for the UN as a "common home for all mankind."
When asked about online rumors suggesting he might lead the UN in 2026, potentially triggering early presidential elections in Kazakhstan, Toqayev said:
I had the opportunity to head the UN Geneva Office for almost three years as Deputy Secretary-General of the UN and Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament. I gained useful experience and understanding of the mechanisms of international processes. I believe that this is more than enough. I have big plans for the development of the country for many years to come, which I intend to implement.
