Tengizchevroil LLP (TCO) has responded to inquiries from Orda.kz regarding potential mass layoffs at the Tengiz field following Chevron's announced plans for cost optimization.
In its official response, TCO stated:
In accordance with the policy of the company, Tengizchevroil (TCO) does not comment on behalf of its participants. TCO carries out its activities in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In addition, TCO does not comment on the details of its personnel matters.
The company also sidestepped questions about whether possible workforce reductions might be connected to President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev's recent statements about increasing state participation in foreign investment projects.
When asked about concession extension, TCO replied:
Any questions related to the extension of the concession should be addressed to the TCO participants.
This comes after Chevron announced plans to reduce its global workforce by 15-20% by the end of 2026 as part of a cost-cutting initiative.
In January, the corporation revealed plans to sell certain assets and implement robotics.
While no confirmed information exists about how these changes might affect Chevron's Kazakhstan operations, TCO's responses are a cause for curiosity.
