The number of people detained in connection with the October 4 protest in Tbilisi has increased to 44, Orda.kz reports, citing The Caucasian Knot.
Georgia’s Interior Ministry announced that eight more individuals have been detained and four others are wanted in relation to what it has dubbed acts of violence during the protests.
Among those detained is 72-year-old pediatrician and medical scientist Giorgi Chakhnashvili.
Chakhnashvili, a doctor of medical sciences, professor, and academician, is a well-known pediatrician and pediatric cardiologist-rheumatologist in Georgia.
According to NewsGeorgia, when it became known that law enforcement officers had come to his apartment, dozens of activists gathered outside his home to show support.
According to transcripts of video recordings released by various media outlets, some of the accused insulted law enforcement officers, threw heavy objects and stones at them, and attempted to enter the courtyard of the presidential palace,
the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has brought charges against five other persons for their involvement in the same protests.
