Taraz: Sentences Extended for Defendants in Group Sexual Assault Case

In Taraz, the appellate court increased the sentences for three teenagers who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl, reports an Orda.kz correspondent.
The minors were sentenced in June. They were found guilty under Articles 120 and 121 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan and sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison each.
An appeals court reviewed the verdict. The defendants received an additional two years and four months added to their sentences. They will serve their sentences in a juvenile correctional facility until they reach 18.
About a year ago, the victim's mother contacted Orda.kz. According to the woman, neighboring teenagers had sexually assaulted her daughter several times and filmed it all.
Despite a police report being filed, the accused were not immediately detained.
The publicity of the story changed the course of events.

The teenagers were between 14 and 16 years old at the time of the crime.
The trial lasted seven months.
