Tajikistan Leadership Shake-up, Expert Comments
Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon has initiated a government reshuffle, removing several high-ranking officials from key positions, Orda reports.
Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center Fellow Temur Umarov broke down the reshuffle and shared his opinion about what this could mean.
Defense Minister Sherali Mirzo, who served since 2013, has been reassigned to head the state secrets department.
Prosecutor General Yusuf Rahmon, whose son's marriage to President Rahmon's daughter Farzona reportedly failed, was dismissed after a decade in office.
Supreme Court Chair Shermuhammad Shokhiyon was also removed but retains the position as head of the National Buzkashi Federation. Communications Service Chief Beg Sabur, another presidential in-law and reportedly a subject of multiple corruption scandals, was among those who went into retirement.
The new appointments include Emomali Sobirzoda as Defense Minister, former military prosecutor Habitullo Vahidzoda as Prosecutor General, and the president's nephew Rajabali Rahmonali as Emergency Committee Head.
Umarov believes these changes appear to be part of a broader strategy related to a potential power transition.
However, the expert also notes that President Rahmon continues to delay the transfer, possibly over concerns about Tajikistan's stability and his son's preparedness to take over.
