Reports have surfaced in Russian media that Syrian opposition fighters have taken control of the Latakia Province, Orda reports.
The area hosts strategic Russian military facilities.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said it was "too early" to discuss their fate.
This is all a subject for discussion with those who will be in power in Syria. Of course, everything is being done now that is necessary and everything that is possible in order to get in touch with those who can deal with security. And, of course, our military is also taking all necessary precautions, Peskov said.
One base, Hmeimim, is an airbase, while the other is the naval facility at Tartous on the coast. Russian state media, TASS, was informed that the rebels did not enter the bases. There is no other confirmation.
Peskov also confirmed that Bashar al-Assad and his family had received asylum in Russia; Putin made the decision.
