For the second day in a row, a strong odor of petroleum products has filled the air in Atyrau. Residents across the city report an unpleasant smell that becomes especially intense in the evenings and at night, Orda.kz reports.
You can’t open the windows — your throat immediately starts to itch. It feels like breathing in exhaust fumes. My child has developed an allergic reaction, said Almagul, a resident of one of the city’s neighborhoods.
Similar complaints have been reported from multiple districts, including Nursaya, Avangard, Privokzalny, and the city center. Residents say the smell “lingers at ground level,” and in the mornings, they feel weak and suffer from headaches.
Local residents attribute the stench to industrial emissions, calling for clarification and immediate action from the authorities.
We live in the oil capital, but it’s impossible to breathe here. How long can we stay silent? wrote Atyrau residents on social media.
As of publication, there has been no official comment from the Atyrau Region Department of Ecology.
