A Sri Lankan family tried to reach Kazakhstan using other people’s Malaysian passports. The scheme was uncovered by Thai immigration officers at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok, Orda.kz reports, citing Vocket.

The group included a woman and her two sons, aged five and 14. They first entered Thailand on Sri Lankan passports and then traveled to Malaysia. From there, the family tried to fly to Kazakhstan through Suvarnabhumi Airport together with a Malaysian citizen who posed as the children’s mother.

Airline staff noticed inconsistencies in the documents and did not allow the passengers to board the flight. The group then changed its route, traveled to Myanmar and tried again to reach Kazakhstan via Thailand.

During an inspection at Don Mueang Airport on June 17, officers found that the woman and her eldest son were traveling on other people’s Malaysian passports. The youngest child’s document was genuine.

The investigation led authorities to an international criminal network.

Its members issued legal birth certificates in Malaysia for children from Sri Lanka and then used them to obtain genuine Malaysian passports. Criminals used such documents to make it easier to enter European countries,Thai law enforcement officers said.

After the detention, the suspects were charged with using travel documents that did not belong to them. Authorities said the two children were not victims of human trafficking. They are now under protection until they return home, with the Sri Lankan embassy involved in the process.

Thailand’s immigration service added that passport forgery networks operate through several transit countries at once.
