The trial has opened in Shymkent for Yernar Zhiembay, the former head of LLP Turgyn Uy Shymkent, who is accused of attempting to assassinate Deputy Akim Ruslan Berdenov, reports Orda.kz.
The Shymkent Interdistrict Specialized Criminal Court is hearing the case. Zhiembay, accused of shooting Berdenov multiple times, remains in custody. At the preliminary hearing, he did not state a position on jury participation.
The incident occurred on April 21. According to the investigation, Zhiembay waited for Berdenov near his workplace and opened fire with a Saiga hunting rifle. The official was hit three times but survived thanks to his driver, who rammed the attacker with his car.
Berdenov sustained serious injuries, including damage to vital organs, and underwent a lengthy surgery.
The official motive cited is a "personal conflict," though unofficial speculation ranges from jealousy to disputes over influence in the municipal sector. When arrested, Zhiembay reportedly accused Berdenov of harassing his wife — a claim the Akimat quickly denied.
Zhiembay previously led a major municipal repair company through which over 3.4 billion tenge in public funds were managed in 2024. Sources suggest tensions escalated after an internal audit led to his dismissal. His past includes a brief stint at the Ministry of Internal Affairs Academy, where he was expelled after a fight.
Ruslan Berdenov is a former Majilis deputy known for his work on the Finance and Budget Committee and his efforts to clean up Shymkent’s construction sector. He had only recently been appointed deputy Akim when the attack occurred.
The trial is being conducted in Kazakh and remains open to the public. Orda.kz is monitoring the case.
