The debate phase in the case of Sherzat Polat’s homicide is coming to an end. Today, the defendants addressed the court. Most began with offering condolences to the family of the deceased while denying guilt, Orda.kz reports.

The defendants claimed that Sherzat's Uncle, Nurganat Gaipbayev, provoked the incident, alleging that he was the first to open fire. Other versions were also presented. One defendant pointed to Sherzat’s father, saying he arrived with a knife and “escalated the situation.”

Others cited “an uncontrolled outburst of emotions,” “village traditions,” and stated that “no one intended harm.”

“We ask forgiveness from the mother of the deceased,” the defendants said.

Some of the accused claimed that Sherzat initiated the fight. One statement in particular led to sobs in the courtroom:

“Apparently, such was fate… Apparently, the time had come – and so he died.”

According to the speaker, Sherzat was not killed by them; rather, “the time had come.” Not a homicide, but “Allah took him.”

According to Vlast.kz, the defense lawyers and defendants have requested:

  • Darkhan Askentay – Full acquittal on the charge of “hooliganism involving a weapon”
  • Ravil Sakiyev – Reclassification of charges to “hooliganism” instead of “hooliganism involving a weapon,” “homicide,” and “attempted homicide”
  • Nurbol Toktaubayev – Reclassification of charges to “hooliganism” instead of “hooliganism involving a weapon”
  • Azamat Toktaubayev – Reclassification of charges to “hooliganism” instead of “hooliganism involving a weapon” and “theft”
  • Shyngys Belgozhayev – Reclassification of charges to “hooliganism” instead of “hooliganism involving a weapon”
