The ongoing trial in the case of Sherzat Polat’s homicide resumed at the Specialized Interdistrict Criminal Court of the Jetisu region, Orda.kz reports.
Today, April 28, witnesses continued to give testimony.
During the hearing, the court reviewed a video recording of the questioning of witness Yelmira Nurbekova. In it, Nurbekova claims that the defendant, Shynasyl Abzal, was sitting on Sherzat Polat and striking him with a knife from above.
In court, she claimed she could not recall the incident.
However, the prosecutor pointed out that Nurbekova gave different testimony during the court proceedings.
The court also listened to a recording of an in-person questioning involving Nurbekova and Karzhaubay Nurymov, where Nurbekova claimed that Sherzat’s father had a rifle.
She also said he had threatened them inside the family’s store.
She had previously stated that the weapon was in the possession of a bearded man unknown to her.
Nurbekova also initially claimed she could not reach emergency services due to a lack of mobile reception.
During the today’s hearing, she stated she did not have a phone at all.
Why were you unafraid to walk at night among armed men, but too afraid to go to the police after what happened?
the state prosecutor asked pointedly.

Nurbekova attributed her behavior to shock and fear. The court was reminded that Nurbekova is a mother of four.
Nurbekova also testified that she saw the gun in the hands of Sherzat Polat's uncle, Nurganat Gaipbayev, who, according to investigators, committed suicide in December 2024.
The exact identity of the person who fired the shots that night remains unclear.
The affected party's lawyer, Meirman Shekeyev, emphasized that, depending on the outcome of the proceedings, Yelmira Nurbekova could face criminal charges for providing false testimony under Article 426 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Depending on her testimony, after the investigation is concluded, we may file a motion regarding this. The court will then decide,
Shekeyev told reporters during a break in the hearing.
Other witnesses were also questioned. In particular, Dana Zhaksigeldy testified that the main defendant, Shynasyl Abzal, allegedly took the gun from the "bearded man."
According to Vlast.kz, she feared for her life and did not call the police.
During the height of the conflict, Zhaksigeldy fled into a nearby car, while Nurbekova remained caught in the middle of the confrontation.
The witness also stated that after the incident, they stopped at another store to buy drinks. Abzal Shynasyl asked her to pour and was wiping something. Later, Zhaksigeldy noticed a knife blade.
According to her, during a face-to-face questioning, Shynasyl admitted that he had a knife in his hands, writes Vlast.kz.
It seems he said (he asked to pour — Ed.) to wipe off fingerprints, so that no traces would remain, she said in response to a prosecutor’s question.
