Kazakhstan’s Science and Higher Education Minister, Sayasat Nurbek, claims that Nazarbayev University (NU) is facing internal provocations and an ongoing information war following sharp criticism from its former president, Shigeo Katsu. Katsu had accused NU’s leadership of corruption and mismanagement, Orda.kz reports.
Nurbek suggested that Katsu still has a significant influence within the university, with many supporters from students and staff.
In addition to publications, there have also been internal provocations. If you look closely, they are intraspecific and illegal in nature. This campaign began the moment he voiced his criticism, Nurbek stated.
He also emphasized that neither the Ministry nor the government has the authority to interfere directly in NU’s affairs, as the institution operates autonomously.
Our directives and regulations do not apply to it. My role is limited to personal coordination as a member of the board of trustees,Nurbek explained.
Nurbek believes Katsu’s accusations have harmed the university’s reputation and suggested that NU’s leadership has the right to take legal action to defend itself.
