Russian forces struck a penal colony in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region overnight, killing at least 17 and injuring dozens more, Orda.kz reports, citing the Ukrainian State Criminal Executive Service.
The airstrike on the Bilenkivska facility occurred around 23:28 on July 29 and involved four guided aerial bombs (GAB). The attack destroyed the prison’s headquarters, quarantine unit, and canteen.
Seventeen incarcerated persons were killed, another 42 were injured, of whom the seriously injured were hospitalized. Another 40 people received injuries of varying severity. One employee of the facility suffered a facial bone fracture, the agency said.
While the prison perimeter remained intact and no escapes occurred, authorities deployed 50 security personnel to maintain order.
Kyiv condemned the strike as a violation of international humanitarian law, emphasizing that correctional facilities are civilian infrastructure and must not be targeted.
Russian airforces bombed the territory of a penal colony in the Zaporizhzhia region around midnight. This was a deliberate, targeted strike. It definitely cannot be called accidental, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said.
