Starting January 1, 2025, Russia has implemented new rules limiting foreign visitors' stay to 90 days total per calendar year, according to the Kazakhstani Embassy in Russia.
This marks a significant change from the previous policy, which allowed visa-free visitors to stay up to 90 days within any 180 days.
The embassy notes that these restrictions don't apply to those entering Russia for study, work, temporary residence, or asylum seekers - they can still stay beyond the 90-day limit. The new rules specifically target visa-free travelers, while visa holders' stays are determined by their visa duration.
Additionally, Interfax reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a decree requiring undocumented migrants to leave Russia by April 30, 2025.
Those wishing to remain must complete several steps to legalize their status, including:
- Registering with migration services
- Providing biometric and medical data
- Demonstrating Russian language proficiency
- Showing knowledge of Russian history and law
- Obtaining proper residence and work permits
- The decree exempts foreigners who have contracts with Russia's Defense Ministry.
