Russia and U.S. Conduct Prisoner Exchange in Abu Dhabi
Moscow has released Ksenia Karelina, who was convicted of treason. At the same time, the United States has handed over Artur Petrov, accused of sanctions evasion and supplying electronics to the Russian Federation, Orda.kz reports, citing RBK.
The exchange took place on April 10 in Abu Dhabi. Russia transferred Ksenia Karelina, a dual citizen of the United States and Russia and a native of Yekaterinburg, who had been sentenced to 12 years in prison for treason.
According to the FSB, Karelina, who lived in Los Angeles, donated funds to a Ukrainian organization allegedly supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The amount transferred, according to the investigation, was $51.80. She was detained in Yekaterinburg in February 2024 while visiting family.
The United States released Artur Petrov, a dual Russian-German citizen. He had been arrested in Cyprus in August 2023 at the U.S.'s request. He was accused of illegally supplying American-made microelectronics to Russia, violating export control laws, and engaging in money laundering.
According to The Wall Street Journal, CIA Director John Ratcliffe participated in the deal and was personally present at the Abu Dhabi airport during the exchange.
A senior intelligence official represented Russia.
