Călin Georgescu, a conservative Romanian politician who ran in the November 2024 presidential election, announced on May 26 that he is retiring from political life, Orda.kz reports.

In a video message published online, Georgescu said he had made a personal decision to step back and become an "observer of public and social life," choosing instead to focus on his family.

Georgescu, known for his ultranationalist views and strong opposition to NATO, led the first round of last year's presidential election with 22.9% of the vote. However, Romania’s Constitutional Court later annulled the results, citing credible evidence of Russian interference in his favor.

Barred from participating in the May 2025 rerun due to ongoing criminal investigations, Georgescu faces charges related to the alleged promotion of fascist ideologies and the public glorification of World War II-era leader Ion Antonescu, responsible for facilitating the Holocaust in Romania.

In his farewell message, Georgescu stated that with the end of the election, “this stage of the sovereignist movement has ended.” He added that he would not join any party or seek public office in the future.

Following his disqualification, nationalist support shifted to far-right Eurosceptic George Simion, who ultimately lost the May 18 runoff to pro-European centrist Nicușor Dan.

Georgescu’s message concluded with a critique of political polarization, warning that public focus on infighting sidelines those working in professions essential to the nation’s well-being.
