Reuters has learned that U.S. President’s Special Representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, may leave his post in January, Orda.kz reports.
According to the agency’s sources, Kellogg cited the expiration of his 360-day mandate as the reason for his departure. Reuters notes that if Kellogg steps down, Ukraine will lose one of its key supporters within the Trump administration.
Reuters, citing four sources familiar with the situation, reports that Kellogg has already informed colleagues that he plans to leave the Trump administration in January. His departure would be unwelcome news for Kyiv, as Kellogg often opposed President Trump’s other special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
Kellogg explained that his mandate as special representative expires in January after 360 days. Once this term ends, the envoy must be confirmed by the Senate, the agency notes. Sources added that Kellogg maintains strong ties with Trump but did not attend the October meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.
Sources also said there has been no discussion of Kellogg’s replacement, and it is possible the position will remain unfilled. The United States still needs to appoint an ambassador to Ukraine, whose nomination requires Senate approval.
