In the Jylyoi district of Kazakhstan’s Atyrau region — an area heavily affected by last year’s spring floods — plans are underway to build a reservoir, Orda.kz reports.
The proposed artificial reservoir would be located 60 kilometers from Qulsary.
At this stage, only the initial discussion of the feasibility has occurred. Out of three feasibility study options, a plan with a 220 million cubic meters capacity was selected. The primary aim is to enhance water security and reduce flood risks along the Jem River.
The issue of building a reservoir in the Jylyoi district was raised back in the days of the USSR. Today, its feasibility and effectiveness are being discussed. In the future, the reservoir should solve the issues of irrigation of farms in the city of Qulsary and adjacent territories,
said Nurgul Kaliyeva, deputy head of the Department of Natural Resources and Nature Management Regulation of the Atyrau Region.
The reservoir is expected to play a key role in strengthening the region's water security and environmental and economic resilience.
